Like ghosts, hunting Imagine this
Dark shadows moving across a bushveld landscape, like ghosts, hunting a reflection of a living animal, twisting and spiraling above.
The vultures move in for a closer view.
Their shadows chasing the still mass of a once living being. She is still now, a memorial of her own life and those before her. A small whimper, a whine emanates from her side, a small movement, a sign of life. The two-month-old white rhino calf lies shaking, in shock, from dehydration and confusion. The noises and terror echoing in her little body. She lies in a pool of dried blood, as close to her cold lifeless mother, daring not to move, hoping her mother would roll over and allow her a drink.
She won’t.
Her life and that of her calf have been decided by greed, an unfound desire to own something that is not yours. The mother’s beauty – her face, her kind lines and mothering noises, extinguished by a machete and a chainsaw, reduced to a blood-stained pulp.
Stop imagining, as this is real and happens every 18 hours.
Human beings see oppression vividly when they are the victims. Otherwise, they victimize blindly, and without a thought.
– Isaac Bashevis Singer, 1978 Nobel Laureate –
Let's take action The time is now
It could be said that for every three white rhino cow’s lives lost to poachers, a dependent calf’s fate has also been sealed. A future rhino and its future offspring, taken in a heartbeat.
